Reviews: Your Baby’s Mind: How to Make The Most of the Critical First Two Years
by S.H. Jacob, Ph.D.
“Many parents worry about whether they are helping or hindering the developmental growth of their baby. They want to help their baby grow into an intelligent human being. For years, many researchers have studied the developmental progress of babies. One of the most widely studied areas of baby development is the growth of the baby’s brain as it relates to intelligence.”
“In his book, You Baby’s Mind: How to Make the Most of the Critical First Two Years, S.H. Jacob, PhD, shows parents and educators how to provide a baby with the appropriate methods to ensure healthy growth and development. Building on Jean Piaget’s research in cognitive development, the author shows that intelligence is a process that should not be assigned a number “because it has no finality.” He states that intelligence is a “way of traveling.” That is, how one makes meaning.
In terms of biological growth of the brain, Jacob explains that the first two years of an infant’s life is critical. He shares his approach on assisting babies mental development and provides a program under a process entitled C.E.O. “ (Construct, Expand, and Own)
“Under the C.E.O. Enrichment Process, Jacob develops and explains the Sensorimotor Phase (birth to two years.) This phase is identified where a baby’s development goes from knowing that is limited to the senses and physical action, to the end of the second year, where the baby develops simplistic verbalization.
Within the Sensorimotor Phase, Jacob presents in detail, the six essential life stages: Birth to one month, one to four months, four to eight months, eight to twelve months, twelve to eighteen months, and finally eighteen to twenty-four months. He explains the importance of each period and how the baby develops. Within each stage, he explains and illustrates how to create a rich environment, implement the appropriate exercises in the form of play (interaction) and toys, and discusses the intelligence attainments for each stage. He shows the cause and effect of implementing the appropriate stage programs.
Your Baby’s Mind: How to Make the Most of the Critical First Two Years, is an essential book for every parent, educator, and caregiver. Not only does the author give an in-depth explanation of infant brain development, but he presents an easy to understand guide to helping your baby achieve optimum growth.”

“First 5 Nevada County recently chose to include the Inventive Minds packets in our parenting group curriculum. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker I am always looking to find quality infant brain research that is easy yet fascinating for the average parent to read. Inventive Minds encourages parents to engage with their children and stimulate their child’s senses and learning in simple, affordable ways. The packets are colorful, modern and contain beautiful, diverse photographs. I find that these packets are richer in information than most handouts, which helps to meet the needs of a higher functioning parent, yet still appropriately written for those parent with less education and knowledge of child development .”

What People Said About The Older Edition
From the Libary Journal
“No other time in a child’s intellectual development is as important as the preschool years, according to Jacob, who bases his theories on research he performed with famous child psychologist Jean Piaget. In this highly practical guide, he promotes nurturing the ways a child learns, and advises against rote learning. Since cognitive structures and functions are set during the preschool years, society’s most important investment for enrichment should involve babies and children under five. His book is filled with games and activities which promote stimulation, nearly all of which employ everyday household objects or simple, inexpensive toys. Jacob recognizes that the encounters between parent and child can be miraculous. Parents and caregivers will find this valuable.”

“There is no more critical period in human intellectual development than the first 24 months of life. This easily accessible book, filled with dozens of specific games that parents can use to stimulate their baby’s mental development at each stage during its first two years, sets out to nurture: intelligence, curiosity, judgment, reasoning, humor, and more.
I haven’t even finished the book yet and I’m raving. The author strikes a perfect balance between too dogmatic (”do it this way”), and too technical (”studies have shown…”). Dr. Jacob cites many studies and experiments to support his points, but does not leave you to wallow in information overflow. He then recommends specific activities you can engage your baby in to enhance intellectual development. No silver bullets, no unsubstantiated claims, but a well examined and researched theory and practice for the lay person. I’m buying several copies for friends and relatives who are interested in giving their baby the best care like I do for my 11 month old daughter. I only wish I had read it sooner!”

“This book highlights the rapid developmental changes your baby goes through from birth through the first 24 months of life. The book guides parents on how to help their child develop cognitive skills. It does not dictate what your child should have accomplished by month 3 or 6, etc. as other development books. Rather, it helps you recognize children develop at different speeds and as a parent you need to realize what stage of development the child is in, then use the learning games in the book to help your child learn to learn. We loved it and look forward to using the outlined techniques with our baby.”

What People Have Said About The Seminars
“Thank you Dr. Jacob for a most informative seminar on early cognitive development! Dr. Jacob really drove home how critical the early years are to a child’s brain development and learning, especially from pre-birth to the age of three. We also learned how action is the bedrock to all other learning; without action, no other meaningful learning is possible. The seminar just stimulated my interest in the subject and I can’t wait to read Dr. Jacob’s book to learn which activities he suggests are important for each stage of a young child’s development. If only all teachers and parents were aware of this important information, the rate of literacy and happy children would skyrocket.”

“I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Dr. Jacob’s seminars. As an educator I was greatly impressed by Dr. Jacob’s ability to take this in-depth subject and present his theories in a straight forward easy to understand manner. Parents who were present and did not have a background in psychology were easily able to make the connections to their children’s development, and Dr. Jacob theories, ensuring that they will make the most of the windows of the opportunity in these crucial first 5 years. I eagerly await the publication of Dr. Jacob’s latest book, Your Baby’s Mind, to continue my studies on cognitive development and learn how I, as an educator, can assist parents in making sure there children reach their full potential.”
